about

The subject for this track was clear:
Sun worship... and human sacrifice... has been a huge presence in this world. This was made very clear to me during a really profound trip through central Mexico in 1996 to visit some of the main... and more out of the way.. Mayan Pyramids. The one that stood out was Tonina. This complex is where they trained their warriors, and took their prisoners. Judgement was passed and, after being kept captive in less that 1 metre square stone boxes, they were beheaded... slowly.. with blunt Obsidion knives.. and their heads were taken down below the earth into the underworld.. to possess their souls for all eternity... nice!!

We visited this deserted site in Chiapas after the CIA tried to prevent us from entering 'a war zone' (Chiapas was considered a hostile and active conflict zone - CIA controlled the state border)... We were let through on the understanding that they would not rescue us in the event of a conflict event... we swiftly pointed out to them that as British, German, and Argentinian nationals.. they would not come and rescue us ANYWAY!! They reluctantly concurred... and stamping a big red stamp in our passports to admonish them of all responsibility...and let us through.
Half a day and one narrowly escaped bandit roadblock later we drove into the excavated, but deserted site at Tonina... and EVERYTHING wanted to eat us alive.. snakes.. ticks.. mosquitos.. the lot... crazy place... you could also FEEL the torment of a hundred thousand tortured and beheaded souls... scary. This place, and our feeling there is the inspiration for 'The Sun God'... and consequently this piece is not 'meant' to be harmonious... or conventionally melodic... it is meant to convey all the fear, conflicting allegiance... conflict... and fanatical belief that many such cults have embraced... leading to the inevitable surrender...and death... of the chosen 'offering'.

Again... an epic and challenging drum performance handled spectacularly by Tim.

The point of death is symbolised by the intense crashing and thunderous release of energy caused by the Chelyabinsk Meteor at the point of impact with Earth.
