about

Beyond the Gates of Ull was our 2nd tape release, a year after Share a Clam, in 1986.
The live Band idea was starting to take shape at this point, and after spending the winter traveling in Europe and Asia , a recording session with myself on Bass and Nick Van Gelder on Drums that summer yielded a whole host of new material, some of which saw the light of day on this release '(UlUlUl He', 'War Apes', 'Simply Conscious dub', and 'I can smell Nirvana'). The bulk of the backing tracks we recorded that day formed the basis of our 3rd release ‘Monads of Mangonia’, which is overall the highest recording quality and best preserved of the 3 original releases.
Beyond the gates is an eclectic mix of recorded and written material, and live jams. 'Uninurnies' and 'living in a nice hedge' both took place at Ed Wynnes place in Wimbledon where we had shared an apartment in the early 80's. We regularly had 'studio' jams, with Ed tweaking effects etc on the desk as we jammed, and he played synth etc. we had a whole bunch of different musicians joining in from time to time and they were really great times with some hilarious moments.
'Bruce babbling in the undergrowth' named after a friend who recorded this track on a walkman was a jam at torpedo town festival with Nick Van gelder on drums, Phil Pickering from Webcore on Bass, Joie on synth… and Steve Bubble I think - correct me if I am wrong! Kay Springer on percussion, and Dan Spanner on Sax… and Roly Wynne was knocking around in there as well. It was a great festival, and cool jam :) Though the quality leaves a lot to be desired it is audible.
It was at the end of this year that we found and enlisted Generator John on drums, and initially Mo on Bass, with Joie, Myself, and Jane Bradfield (then Joies girlfriend) as ‘Nana Obscure’ on vocals, often accompanied by Mo's daughter Hava (then aged about 7yrs old!) on vocals :) Mo later retired from the band and Kay took over on Bass whilst remaining one of our singing duo with janey.
The other element of tracks on this tape comprises some amazing ambient tracks recorded and written with Joie Hinton with his unmistakable chordal choices, such as Edilhe, Thump the hamster, The Emerald table, Improbable Muziks, and Whales in the grass.
Cluck Cluck Oi was recorded in my studio in Clapham whilst we were doing overdubs for the Nick Van gelder sessions, during a tea break we just set up a mic and grabbed a bunch of things that would make noises and mixed it in with some radio recordings made in India.

Finding and remastering some of these tracks has been a real challenge, and consequently the quality varies greatly, particularly with this release… such is fate… and resting our lives firmly in the lap of the gods at the time. We were all skint most of the time, living in squats, hanging out at free festivals etc… and generally living the life of Riley… it is a wonder any of them survived really!! :)
